How AI is Changing the Future of Recruiting

Nov 14, 2018 9:44:00 AM

AI has started to shape the future of recruiting. While "artificial intelligence" sounds somewhat futuristic and intimidating, it is actually more applicable to recruiting than you might think. From chatbots to analytics and automation, there are numerous ways to incorporate AI into your recruiting process. In this article, we'd like to share with you how AI and recruiting overlap and what areas of AI you might want to start utilizing.

What is AI?

AI is short for artificial intelligence, which is defined by Merriam-Webster as, “the capability of a machine to imitate intelligent human behavior”. AI is used across various disciplines, from healthcare, to education, to recruiting.

How do recruiting and AI overlap?

While there are numerous ways that AI and recruiting overlap, we are going to focus on three main points: automation, analytics, and chatbots. These are all emerging trends that many recruiting departments have already started to adopt.

Automation

Automation is starting to play a huge role in recruiting, especially when there are a lot of open positions to fill. It makes the recruiting process faster, more efficient, and frees up time for other more important activities. Through automation, recruiters are able to do things like CV parsing, sending emails to multiple candidates, sourcing, and more.

Analytics

Alongside of automation, analytics have become increasingly important in recruiting. By using a tool or a software, recruiters are able to gather a large amount of data about their recruiting process. For instance, they are able to determine which channels are the most successful or where they are losing applicants in their job advertisements.

Chatbots

Chatbots are also being utilized by some recruiters. For example, if a candidate on your career page has a question, he or she can get a quick and reliable answer via a chatbot, without a member of the HR department having to take the time to reply. What are the benefits?

AI has a lot of benefits for the modern day recruiting process. For example, by eliminating time consuming tasks through automation, recruiters can dedicate their time to other tasks that often get neglected. AI can help to reach KPIs, like reducing the time to hire and increasing the number of qualified applications. It can also help recruiters to better understand their recruiting process and make necessary improvements.

What are the risks?

AI comes with the risk of putting candidate experience in jeopardy. By sending out an incorrect automated email or dealing with an unhelpful chatbot, the less “human” side of AI may lead to a decrease in candidate satisfaction. One recent example of AI gone wrong in the news was the gender-biased AI recruitment tool from Amazon that had to be shut down after unfairly favoring male candidates.
